Cancer is one of the hardest battles anyone can face. But for many, the struggle is made even tougher by factors entirely out of their control. Where you live, how much you earn, and your ethnic background shouldn’t dictate the quality of care you receive—yet, for too many people in the UK, it does. This week, Macmillan Cancer Support launched its national “Fair Cancer Care” campaign. Created in partnership with AMV BBDO, the campaign aims to expose the gaps in the current system while amplifying the voices of those who have felt invisible or unheard.
Moving Beyond the Hospital Ward
While previous campaigns have often centered on the incredible work of Macmillan Nurses, this new initiative broadens the lens. It highlights the full spectrum of support available, from community-led initiatives to one-on-one emotional guidance.
The centerpiece of the campaign is a powerful 60-second film featuring real people with lived experience, including:
Paul Campbell, CEO of Cancer Black Care
Maurice Blake of Can Survive UK
Anderson Boyce of Barbers Against Prostate Cancer
By featuring real stories rather than “polished” scripts, Macmillan is ensuring that representation is at the heart of their mission.
The Reality of the Gap
Inequality in healthcare isn’t just a buzzword; it has life-altering consequences. Barriers such as language differences, income disparity, and regional healthcare “postcode lotteries” can lead to:
Delayed diagnoses
Limited treatment options
Lower survival rates
“We wanted this campaign to bring to life the unfairness faced by those living with cancer who feel invisible and unheard in a system which isn’t designed for their needs.” — Sam Williams, Strategy Partner at AMV BBDO
A Rallying Cry: “It Takes Us All”
The campaign concludes with a shift from the harsh realities of inequality to a message of collective hope. It’s a call to action for the public, healthcare professionals, and partners like Boots to unite under the “Whatever It Takes” banner. To ensure the message was authentic and credible, Macmillan partnered with The Unmistakables and consulted with OUTpatients, ensuring that the nuances of different communities were respected and reflected accurately.
